“Welcome back to America’s Story Box! Today’s timeless tale from Aesop’s Fables is The Ass and His Purchaser. This story reminds us of the simple truth: a man is known by the company he keeps.

A man once went to market, hoping to buy an Ass.
He spotted a strong-looking animal and asked the owner if he could take him home on trial, to see what kind of beast he was.

When he reached home, he put the newcomer into the stable with his other asses.
The new Ass looked around and—without hesitation—chose to sit right beside the laziest and greediest donkey of them all.

The master noticed this at once. Without wasting a moment, he tied a halter on the new donkey and led him back to the market.

The seller was surprised.
“Why, have you tested him already?” he asked.

The man replied,
“I don’t need to test him any further. I know exactly what sort of creature he is—because of the companion he chose for himself.
